Moving to Sweden for Work: The 2026 Work Permit Salary Requirement Explained

What counts as a work permit in Sweden

Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency, sets out several routes for people who want to work in Sweden. You can apply for a work permit or a residence permit to work as an employee or a self-employed person, for a permit to accompany a family member who is already working in Sweden, for a permit tied to temporary employment, or for a residence permit to come to Sweden specifically to look for work. Migrationsverket also notes that certain people do not need to apply for a work permit at all in order to work in the country.

The salary requirement you need to clear

The number most job seekers want first is the minimum salary. Migrationsverket states that the median salary in Sweden, as calculated by Statistics Sweden (SCB), was updated as of 16 June 2026 to SEK 38,300. Based on that figure, Migrationsverket requires a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month, equal to 90 per cent of the median salary, in order to grant a work permit. This threshold applies to applicants for employment in Sweden under the current rules.

New rules in force since 1 June 2026

That salary figure sits inside a wider set of changes. Migrationsverket confirms that new work permit rules took effect on 1 June 2026, and describes the changes as including the new salary requirement, a requirement for comprehensive health insurance, and minimum salary levels specifically for seasonal work permits and ICT permits. If you are applying for a work permit, or extending one, for employment in Sweden from that date onward, these are the rules that apply to your case.

Family members, researchers and other applicants

If you plan to bring family with you, Migrationsverket has introduced new rules for family members accompanying employees, which apply from 1 October 2026 and change certain requirements for those accompanying someone who holds or is applying for a work permit. Separately, the Swedish Parliament has decided on new rules for researchers and doctoral students, which cover doctoral students with a hosting agreement, easier access to a permanent residence permit, and more situations in which another permit can be applied for while already in Sweden. On top of this, from 13 July 2026, stricter requirements regarding "good conduct" apply to people applying for a residence permit, including on the grounds of employment.

Before you apply

Migrationsverket also publishes guidance on how to avoid fake job offers and employers who do not follow the rules, alongside separate information aimed at employers who are planning to hire people who need a permit to work in Sweden. With the salary floor, the family-member requirements, and the good conduct rules all updated in 2026, it is worth checking Migrationsverket's current guidance against your own situation, whether you are applying as an employee, a self-employed person, someone on a temporary contract, or a job seeker coming to Sweden to look for work, before you submit an application.
