What European Employers Ask Software Developers For, Country by Country

Software developer job ads differ a lot depending on where in Europe the role is based. Looking at NewLuxJob's own job board data across its country pages for the software developer role, the skills employers list most often change noticeably from one market to the next, even though a handful of tools and methods show up almost everywhere.

Java and Python Are the Two Most Common Core Languages

Java appears among the top listed skills in every country covered. Ireland shows the highest share, with 52 percent of its 194 postings asking for Java, followed by Denmark at 46 percent of 37 postings and Poland at 44 percent of 976 postings. Switzerland lists Java in 42 percent of 134 postings, matching France's 42 percent of 634 postings.

Python is close behind in several markets. Switzerland asks for Python in 43 percent of its postings, almost level with its Java share, and Denmark lists Python in 43 percent of its postings too. Sweden shows Python in 39 percent of 662 postings, and Germany in 38 percent of 633 postings.

CI/CD and Cloud Platforms Show Up Widely

Continuous integration and deployment experience is listed on nearly every country page. Luxembourg's 55 postings ask for CI/CD most often, at 45 percent, ahead of Portugal at 33 percent of 165 postings and Sweden at 32 percent of 662 postings. France lists it in 30 percent of 634 postings, and Poland in 20 percent of 976 postings.

Cloud platform experience varies by provider and country. Ireland lists AWS in 41 percent of its 194 postings, and Sweden in 27 percent of 662 postings. Azure appears in 29 percent of Belgium's 529 postings, 29 percent of Sweden's postings, and 27 percent of Denmark's 37 postings. Docker is requested in 29 percent of Luxembourg's postings and 26 percent of Austria's 66 postings.

Agile and Scrum Knowledge Appears on Most Country Pages

Process experience matters alongside technical tools in these listings. Agile or Scrum appears in 46 percent of Italy's 174 postings and 40 percent of Portugal's 165 postings. It is also listed in 36 percent of the Netherlands' 362 postings, 35 percent of Luxembourg's 55 postings, 33 percent of Belgium's 529 postings, and 32 percent of both France's 634 postings and Ireland's 194 postings. It does not appear among the top listed skills on every country page reviewed.

Local Stacks Still Shape What Gets Listed

Some countries lean on stacks that do not show up elsewhere in this data. Belgium's listings mention .NET in 43 percent of its 529 postings, a skill that does not appear among the top listed skills for the other countries covered, alongside SQL at 36 percent. SQL is also common in Poland, at 32 percent of 976 postings, and in Austria, at 36 percent of 66 postings.

TypeScript stands out in Austria, at 32 percent of 66 postings, and in Germany, at 24 percent of 633 postings. Angular is listed in 29 percent of Belgium's postings and 24 percent of France's postings, while React appears in 26 percent of Ireland's 194 postings and 19 percent of Poland's 976 postings.

What This Means for Job Seekers

These figures come from NewLuxJob's own job ads for the software developer role on each country page, not from a general labor statistics source. For job seekers comparing markets, the listings suggest Java and Python are the most consistently named programming languages, CI/CD and cloud platform experience are frequently listed alongside them, and Agile or Scrum process knowledge appears on most, though not all, of the country pages reviewed. Frameworks and databases such as .NET, SQL, TypeScript, Angular and React vary more by country and are worth checking directly against the listings for the market you are targeting.
