Where the ads come from

We collect job ads that employers publish openly: employers' own career sites, public employment services and job boards. Every source is checked at least once a day. We currently aggregate 87 sources. We do not run surveys and do not estimate: every figure is a count of ads.

Definitions

Open job

An ad counts as open while its source still lists it. It is marked closed once our checks have failed to find it on the source several times in a row (usually within one to three days of its removal), or when its application deadline has passed. As a safety net, an ad that has not been seen on its source in the last 30 days is no longer counted, which also covers a source that stops answering. Ads flagged as invalid and listings that are not job ads are excluded.

Mentions visa sponsorship

The employer's own ad text says it sponsors a visa or helps with a work permit. This is what the employer wrote, not a promise that a visa will be granted, and not our assessment of the job. The text check is automatic and built to miss rather than overcount: refusals (“we cannot sponsor”), questions and requirements (“must already hold a work permit”) are not counted.

visa_mention_jobs covers only the sources we republish on our public job pages, which are a subset of the sources behind open_jobs. Dividing one by the other therefore does not give the share of all open jobs that mention visa sponsorship.

Europe

Europe means the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The file has one row for each European country where we publish market pages: Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Czechia, Denmark, Luxembourg. The United States, where we also collect ads, is not included.

Coverage caveat

The set of sources changes as we add new ones and as sources stop publishing. A change in a country's count from one week to the next can therefore reflect a change in our sources rather than in the labour market. Compare countries and periods with this in mind, and do not read the figures as the total number of vacancies in a country: many jobs are never advertised on a public source.

Updates

Sources are collected every day. The counts are recomputed every few hours and the file is refreshed at most once an hour, so a figure can lag the latest collection by several hours. The date column tells you which day the data reflects.
