What Mechanics Earn and What Skills Employers Ask For Across Europe

What Mechanics Earn in France, Germany and Czechia

Mechanic pay varies a lot depending on where the job is posted. According to NewLuxJob's own job data, the median mechanic salary in Germany is 36,120 EUR, with the middle half of postings ranging from 31,920 EUR to 42,000 EUR, based on 712 job postings.

In France, the median mechanic salary is 25,800 EUR, with the middle half of job ads ranging from 22,746 EUR to 30,000 EUR, drawn from 2,144 postings.

In Czechia, the median mechanic salary is 18,373 EUR, with the middle half of postings ranging from 15,394 EUR to 21,104 EUR, based on 766 job postings.

What German and French Employers Ask For

Looking at the skills mentioned in mechanic job ads shows what employers actually want on the shop floor, and it differs by country.

In Germany, based on 935 mechanic postings, Maintenance appears in 69% of listings, followed by Mechatronics at 47%, Repair at 45%, Automotive at 21%, Welding at 13%, and Diagnostics also at 13%.

In France, from 1,112 mechanic postings, Maintenance is the most requested skill at 71%, ahead of Diagnostics at 66%, Repair at 58%, Automotive at 31%, Hydraulics at 30%, and Pneumatics at 24%. Diagnostics and Hydraulics both show up more often in French ads than in German ones, while Maintenance leads in both countries.

What Employers in Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands Want

The mix of requested skills looks different again further north and east.

In Poland, based on 669 mechanic postings, Repair tops the list at 69%, followed by Diagnostics at 41%, Hydraulics at 18%, Engine at 11%, Mechatronics at 7%, and Welding at 6%.

In Belgium, from 637 postings, Diagnostics leads at 61%, ahead of Maintenance at 27%, Hydraulics at 20%, Automotive and Pneumatics tied at 16%, and Repair at 15%.

In the Netherlands, based on 113 postings, Diagnostics again comes first at 62%, followed by Maintenance at 28%, Repair at 26%, Automotive at 25%, Mechatronics at 18%, and Hydraulics at 15%.

Diagnostics stands out as the top-requested skill in both Belgium and the Netherlands, while Poland leans more heavily toward hands-on Repair work.

Ireland and Czechia: A Different Skill Mix

Two markets show a noticeably different pattern of demands.

In Ireland, based on 94 mechanic postings, Repair is requested in 90% of ads, Diagnostics in 85%, and Maintenance in 80%. Engine skills follow at 37%, Hydraulics at 28%, and Brakes at 23%. These are the highest percentages recorded among the countries covered here, suggesting Irish mechanic ads tend to list more required skills per posting.

In Czechia, based on 368 postings, Diagnostics leads at 60%, followed by Automotive at 35%, Hydraulics and Pneumatics tied at 14%, Mechatronics at 3%, and Engine at 2%.

What This Means for Job Seekers

The skills most requested in mechanic job ads are not the same everywhere. Maintenance dominates in Germany and France, Diagnostics dominates in Belgium, the Netherlands and Czechia, and Repair dominates in Poland and especially Ireland. Mechanics looking at roles across borders may want to check which combination of skills (Maintenance, Diagnostics, Repair, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Mechatronics, Automotive, Welding, Engine or Brakes) comes up most often for their target country before applying, since the emphasis clearly shifts from one market to the next. Pay also differs substantially between the three countries covered here, with the German median more than double the Czech median and the French median sitting in between.
