Nurse and Care Worker Pay and Skills Across Europe: What the Job Ads Show

If you're a nurse or care worker looking at job options in Europe, pay and expectations vary a lot by country. Here's what NewLuxJob's own job ads show for France, Germany and Czechia on salary, and for Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland on the skills employers list most often.
What nurses earn, country by country
In France, nurse and healthcare job ads on NewLuxJob show a median salary of 29,043 euros. The middle half of postings fall between 24,804 and 36,460 euros. This is based on 4,464 job postings.
In Germany, the median is higher, at 43,690 euros, with the middle half of postings ranging from 31,962 to 52,800 euros. This comes from 582 job postings.
In Czechia, the median is lower than both, at 19,267 euros, with the middle half between 15,890 and 23,587 euros, based on 839 job postings.
These figures come from NewLuxJob's own job board data for the nurse and healthcare category in each country, not from a public statistics agency.
Germany and France: different skills, different emphasis
Looking at what employers actually ask for in job ads tells a different story than pay alone.
In Germany, across 983 nurse and healthcare postings, Nursing is mentioned in 91 percent of ads, by far the most common skill. Documentation follows at 36 percent, and Geriatric Care at 35 percent. Medication appears in 9 percent of ads, while Basic Care and ICU/Intensive Care each appear in 6 percent.
In France, across 688 postings, the picture shifts: Hygiene is the most mentioned skill, at 60 percent, ahead of Nursing itself at 32 percent. Geriatric Care appears in 19 percent of ads, Medication in 15 percent, Palliative Care in 8 percent, and ICU/Intensive Care in just 1 percent.
So a nurse comparing these two markets isn't just looking at different pay bands, but at ads that frame the job differently - Germany's postings lean on documentation and geriatric experience alongside nursing itself, while France's lean more heavily on hygiene.
Poland, Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland: skills vary just as much
The pattern of employers emphasizing different skills continues elsewhere in Europe.
In Poland, from 378 postings, Nursing leads at 69 percent, followed by Hygiene at 31 percent. Patient Care appears in 8 percent of ads, Medication in 2 percent, and Documentation in just 1 percent.
In Belgium, from 207 postings, Nursing dominates at 80 percent. Documentation appears in 9 percent of ads, Hygiene in 8 percent, Geriatric Care in 7 percent, and Palliative Care and Patient Care each in 6 percent.
Sweden stands out: from 284 postings, Documentation is the top-mentioned skill at 80 percent, well ahead of Palliative Care at 25 percent. Geriatric Care, Nursing and Patient Care each appear in only 1 percent of ads, and Hygiene in 0 percent.
In Switzerland, from 98 postings, Nursing leads at 53 percent, Documentation follows at 22 percent, and Medication and Hygiene appear in 15 percent and 10 percent of ads respectively. Patient Care appears in 9 percent, and Basic Care in 7 percent.
What this means if you're job hunting
These numbers, all taken from NewLuxJob's own live job ads, show that neither pay nor required skills look the same from one European country to the next. Germany's job ads offer the highest median pay of the three countries measured, but also ask for documentation and geriatric care skills alongside core nursing. France's median sits in the middle, with hygiene as the most frequently mentioned skill. Czechia's median is the lowest of the three, drawn from 839 postings.
Beyond pay, the skills employers list most often differ sharply by country - from Sweden's heavy focus on documentation to Belgium and Germany's focus on nursing itself. If you're applying across borders, it's worth reading the actual skill requirements in each country's ads rather than assuming the job looks the same everywhere.
