Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List: Which Jobs Qualify for a Work Permit

Ireland's Critical Skills Employment Permit targets professionals in occupations where shortages exist. The eligible roles are published by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on enterprise.gov.ie under the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List. If your job title appears on it, you may qualify. This article maps out the main categories, based on the official source.

Technology and ICT Roles

IT professionals are among the most broadly covered. Occupation group 213 includes:

• IT specialist managers and BIM Managers (2133)
• IT project and programme managers (2134)
• IT business analysts, architects and systems designers (2135)
• Programmers and software development professionals (2136)
• Web design and development professionals (2137)
• All other ICT professionals not elsewhere classified (2139)

ICT directors (1136) also appear at the senior management level. The coverage here is wide, reaching most roles in software and infrastructure.

Healthcare and Allied Health Professions

Healthcare is one of the most heavily represented sectors on the list. Eligible roles include:

• Medical practitioners (2211)
• Psychologists (2212)
• Pharmacists and industrial pharmacists (2213)
• Optometrists (2214)
• Radiographers, radiation therapists, cardiac physiologists, vascular and respiratory physiologists (2217)
• Podiatrists (2218)
• Audiologists, perfusionists, dieticians and medical scientists (2219)

Therapy professionals also qualify: physiotherapists (2221), occupational therapists (2222), speech and language therapists (2223), and orthoptists (2229).

Registered nurses (2231) and registered midwives (2232) are listed under nursing and midwifery. At the associate level, PHECC-registered paramedics and advanced paramedic practitioners (3213) appear, as do prosthetists, orthotists and respiratory physiologists (3218).

Engineering and Construction

Group 212 covers a broad range of engineering roles:

• Civil, structural and site engineers (2121)
• Mechanical engineers (2122)
• Electrical engineers (2123)
• Electronics engineers specialising in chip design, test engineering, application engineering, process automation, or power generation (2124)
• Design and development engineers with relevant specialisations (2126)
• Production and process engineers, including chemical process engineers (2127)
• Material scientists, setting-out engineers, facade designers and project engineers (2129)

On the built environment side, architects (2431), quantity surveyors (2433), geospatial and land surveyors (2434), architectural technologists (2435), construction project managers and commercial managers (2436), and BIM coordinators (3122) are all included. Town planning officers (2432) also appear.

Finance, Legal, and Business Professionals

Eligibility in finance is specific rather than broad:

• Chartered and certified accountants, taxation experts, and qualified accountants meeting defined auditing criteria (2421)
• Management consultants and business analysts specialising in big data analytics with skills in IT, data mining, modelling and advanced maths (2423)
• Business and financial project management professionals in finance, investment analytics, risk analytics, credit or fraud analytics (2424)
• Actuaries, economists and statisticians specialising in big data analytics (2425)

Legal eligibility is narrow: intellectual property professionals (2419) are listed; other legal roles are not.

In sales and marketing, business sales executives with fluency in a non-EEA official language covering international or IT B2B roles (3542) qualify, as do international marketing experts with technical knowledge in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, software or SaaS products (3543).

Science, Animation, and Other Roles

Natural and social science roles under group 211 include chemical scientists, biological scientists and biochemists, physical scientists, and agronomists working in manufacturing, product development, analytical development or biotechnology contexts (2111, 2112, 2113).

Quality and regulatory professionals form their own group (246): quality control and planning engineers (2461), quality assurance and regulatory professionals (2462), and environmental health professionals (2463).

Animation is a smaller but specific cluster. Art directors in 2D or 3D animation with at least one year of experience in the role (2473), background and design artists (3411), and character, prop, location and layout designers (3421) are eligible. Riggers within the games industry (3417) also appear.

Social workers (2442) qualify under welfare professionals.
