About this job

Location: Stockholm & Boden Reporting to: Project Delivery Leadership Function: Project Delivery We are building one of the world’s most advanced greenfield steel plants; a fully integrated, low-carbon facility designed from the ground up for sustainability, efficiency, and future scalability. We are looking for an exceptional Head of Engineering to lead the engineering function within our Project Delivery team. In this critical leadership role, you will own the end-to-end engineering delivery for the current Stegra Boden greenfield steel mill project and lay the foundation for replicating and scaling similar projects globally. You will build and lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary engineering organisation while ensuring world-class standards in safety, quality, cost, and schedule in a complex industrial environment. Key Responsibilities Build, lead, and develop a strong in-house engineering organisation covering all major disciplines (process, mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, automation, environmental, etc.). Define and drive the overall engineering strategy, technical standards, design philosophies, and ways of working for the project and future global rollouts. Ensure engineering deliverables meet the highest requirements for safety, quality, cost control, and schedule across all project phases (FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up). Oversee coordination and integration of engineering partners, EPC contractors, technology providers, and equipment suppliers. Lead field engineering, construction technical support, and quality assurance activities on site, with a strong focus on resolving technical issues in real time. Establish robust engineering governance, change management processes, document control, and lessons-learned systems. Manage the engineering budget, drive value engineering, and continuously improve engineering performance and productivity. Work seamlessly with Construction, Procurement, Commissioning, Operations, HS&E, and other functions to deliver truly integrated project execution. Champion a strong safety culture, embedding best practices in design for operational safety. As a fast-growing company with minimal silos, you will be expected to contribute flexibly beyond core engineering tasks when needed. What You will Bring You are a collaborative, curious, and decisive leader who thrives in complex, high-stakes environments. You challenge conventional thinking constructively, build trust across teams, and are passionate about delivering transformative industrial projects. We understand that not all candidates will fulfill all the requirements listed below. However, we would like to see that you can tick off a fair amount of the boxes below: Essential qualifications and experience: 10–15+ years of progressive experience in engineering leadership on large-scale capital projects, preferably in steel, metals, mining, oil & gas, chemicals, or other heavy/process industries. Direct experience on greenfield industrial projects (ideally steel plants, DRI/HBI facilities, or similar first-of-a-kind plants) from detailed design through construction and commissioning. Proven track record of successfully building and developing high-performing, multi-disciplinary engineering teams (50+ people, including matrix and external resources). Strong hands-on understanding of full project execution - from conceptual/FEED engineering to field realities, constructability, and start-up. Demonstrated success in managing complex interfaces with EPC contractors, technology licensors, and major equipment suppliers. Deep knowledge of relevant engineering standards, quality systems, risk management, and change control in heavy industry. Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels in a multicultural, international setting. A genuine and visible commitment to safety leadership and the ability to embed a strong safety culture across engineering and construction teams. University degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Process, Civil, or another relevant engineering discipline (Master’s or Chartered/Professional Engineer status is a plus). Highly advantageous: Experience with hydrogen and steel technologies (DRI, hydrogen reduction, EAF, Hot & Cold Rolling will be beneficial). Previous exposure to modular construction, digital twins, advanced automation, or BIM/3D model-based project delivery. International project experience and comfort working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial scale-up environment. This is a unique opportunity to shape the engineering backbone of a landmark green steel project and build capabilities that will support replication. If you are an experienced engineering leader ready to take full ownership in a high-visibility, purpose-driven project, we would love to hear from you.
