L'histoire de Costco d ébute en 1976 quand l’entrepreneur Sol Price lance un concept de club-entrepôt dans le commerce de détail. Price Club, situé à San Diego en Californie, est alors le premier entrepôt-club à adhésion. Dans ses débuts, Price Club est réservé aux entreprises qui peuvent y trouver un large choix d’articles en gros. Sept ans plus tard, fort de son expérience, Jim Sinegal fonde avec Jeff Brotman un concept similaire, Costco Wholesale. Ensemble, ils ouvrent un premier club-entrepôt à Kirkland, près de Seattle dans l’État de Washington en 1983. Au cours des 10 années qui suivent, Price Club et Costco Wholesale ne cessent d’innover et de croître.
