What European Employers Want From Sales Hires, Country by Country

Job ads say a lot about what a market actually values, not just what a candidate assumes a recruiter wants. Looking across NewLuxJob's sales postings in ten European countries shows the mix of skills employers ask for is far from uniform - the same job title comes with a different skill profile depending on where you apply.

Negotiation is the top ask in Germany and Luxembourg

In Germany, negotiation appears in 48% of the 443 sales postings reviewed, ahead of CRM at 34%, B2B at 28%, pipeline at 26%, account management at 23% and Salesforce at 12%. Luxembourg shows an even stronger lean toward negotiation: 58% of its 45 sales postings ask for it, followed closely by pipeline at 47%, CRM at 29%, B2B at 24%, account management at 24% and lead generation at 13%.

B2B experience dominates in Poland and Sweden

Poland stands out for how far B2B experience leads the rest of the list: 62% of its 273 sales postings ask for it, well ahead of negotiation at 27%, CRM at 26%, Salesforce at 10%, KPI at 7% and account management at 3%. Sweden shows a similar pattern at a smaller scale, with B2B in 56% of its 375 postings, CRM in 37%, pipeline in 30%, negotiation in 22%, account management in 20% and Salesforce in 14%.

CRM and pipeline lead in Spain, Ireland and Italy

Spain's 320 sales postings put CRM at the top with 50%, followed by pipeline at 45%, Salesforce at 26%, B2B at 25%, negotiation at 24% and account management at 10%. Ireland's 170 postings favor pipeline first, at 46%, with CRM at 33%, Salesforce at 30%, negotiation at 28%, B2B at 16% and account management also at 16%. Italy's 210 postings show CRM leading at 46%, pipeline at 33%, B2B at 28%, negotiation at 26%, Salesforce at 16% and KPI at 13%.

Cold calling stands out in France, CRM leads in Belgium and the Netherlands

France is the one market in this list where cold calling tops the skill ranking: 39% of its 163 sales postings mention it, just ahead of negotiation at 38%, with CRM at 23%, B2B at 17%, Salesforce at 10% and account management at 5%. Belgium's 365 postings put B2B first at 42%, CRM close behind at 37%, account management at 20%, KPI at 12%, and negotiation and cold calling tied at 10% each. In the Netherlands, CRM leads its 293 postings at 40%, with pipeline at 31%, B2B at 23%, negotiation at 20%, account management at 19% and Salesforce at 15%.

What this means if you're applying for a sales role in Europe

None of these figures describe every sales job in a given country - they describe the share of postings on NewLuxJob that mention each skill in that market. Still, the pattern is useful for tailoring a CV or cover letter: a candidate applying in Poland or Sweden gains more by foregrounding B2B experience, while the same candidate applying in Germany or Luxembourg gains more by foregrounding negotiation track record. In France, cold calling experience is worth stating explicitly rather than folding it into a general "sales" description, and in Spain, Ireland or Italy, CRM and pipeline management experience are the two skills worth leading with. Matching your application language to what a specific market's job ads actually ask for is a small adjustment that can make a CV read as a closer fit.
