What Employers Want From Accountant Auditors: A Country-by-Country Skills Breakdown

Job ads for Accountant Auditor roles do not read the same way in every European country. Looking at Accountant Auditor postings on NewLuxJob across eleven markets, the skills employers list most often shift noticeably depending on where the role is based. Here is what the postings show, country by country.
Tax knowledge tops the list in most markets
Tax is the single most requested skill in several countries. In Germany, Tax appears in 63% of the 832 Accountant Auditor postings reviewed, ahead of every other skill listed for that market. Poland follows closely with Tax at 62% of 706 postings. In Luxembourg, Tax shows up in 60% of 189 postings, and in France it appears in 56% of 909 postings. Belgium lists Tax at 55% of 691 postings, and Austria at 54% of 95 postings.
Where auditing experience matters most
Auditing itself is the leading skill in a different set of countries. Ireland has the highest share among the countries covered, with Auditing mentioned in 68% of 142 postings, followed by Reporting at 59%. Luxembourg is close behind at 67% of 189 postings. Spain lists Auditing in 51% of 312 postings, and the Netherlands in 49% of 398 postings. Auditing appears less often in Poland, at just 6% of 706 postings, and in Sweden, at 18% of 446 postings.
Excel is still a baseline requirement
Excel remains widely requested even in markets where it is not the top skill. Sweden lists it most, at 66% of 446 postings, well ahead of Reporting (30%) and SAP (21%) in the same market. Poland follows at 45% of 706 postings, and Austria at 43% of 95 postings. Excel appears in 40% of Italy's 229 postings, 37% of Belgium's 691 postings, and 35% of Germany's 832 postings. It is mentioned least often in France, at 21% of 909 postings.
Reporting, IFRS and consolidation vary by market
Reporting is the leading skill in Italy, appearing in 59% of 229 postings, and in Ireland at the same 59% share of 142 postings. Luxembourg lists Reporting at 58% of 189 postings, and Austria at 56% of 95 postings. It appears far less often in Poland, at 7% of 706 postings, and in Belgium and France, at 12% and 14% respectively.
IFRS knowledge is most requested in Luxembourg, at 38% of 189 postings, followed by Austria at 22% of 95 postings and Sweden at 13% of 446 postings. Consolidation shows a similar pattern, appearing in 26% of Luxembourg's postings and 20% of Italy's 229 postings, compared with 8% in the Netherlands' 398 postings.
Country-specific extras worth noting
A few skills only stand out in individual markets. HGB, the German accounting standard, appears in 20% of Germany's 832 postings. VAT is most requested in Poland, at 42% of 706 postings, and also appears in 22% of France's 909 postings, 12% of Belgium's 691 postings, and 11% of Ireland's 142 postings. Payroll shows up in 12% of France's postings. SAP is most common in Austria, at 35% of 95 postings, and also appears in 28% of Germany's postings, 21% of Sweden's postings, 20% of Italy's postings, 16% of Spain's postings, 14% of Belgium's postings, and 10% of Poland's postings. Ireland is the only market in this data where US GAAP is listed, at 13% of 142 postings.
For job seekers, the practical takeaway from these postings is that a single, one-size-fits-all skill set does not match what employers are asking for across borders. Tax knowledge dominates ads in Germany, Poland and Luxembourg, auditing experience is emphasized more in Ireland and the Netherlands, and Excel remains a near-universal request, most of all in Sweden. Checking which skills are emphasized in the specific country and role you are applying for, rather than assuming the same profile works everywhere, lines up with what these job postings actually show.
