Luxembourg Wage Indexation Explained: The Next Tranche and What It Means for Your Payslip

How wage indexation works in Luxembourg
Luxembourg links pay to the cost of living through a mechanism known as the "echelle mobile des salaires," or sliding wage scale. The rules governing it, which apply to salaried employees and pensioners, are set out in article 3 of the amended law of 25 March 2015. In practice, STATEC, the national statistics office, calculates a six-month average of the national consumer price index (IPCN) every month. When that average crosses a fixed level, called the "cote d'application," salaries, wages and pensions across the country rise automatically by 2.5% from the following month. No application is needed and the increase is not negotiated case by case.
The tranche of 1 June 2026
The most recent adjustment took effect on 1 June 2026. STATEC's provisional figures put the annual inflation rate of the national consumer price index at 2.3% for May 2026. That was enough to push the six-month average of the index, linked to the 1.1.1948 base, past its trigger point of 1038.79 points. As a result, the index's application rate moved from 968.04 points to 992.24 points, and salaries, wages and pensions rose by 2.5% from that date.
The threshold STATEC is tracking now: 1064.75
Since that tranche, STATEC has been watching a new trigger point every month: 1064.75 points. Once the six-month average of the index crosses this level, a further 2.5% tranche is activated automatically. In its October data, STATEC reported that the six-month average rose from 1058.56 to 1059.80 points, with cumulative price growth standing at 2.02% since the June 2026 tranche. Annual inflation itself eased over the same period, down to 2.7% in October from 2.9% in September, while the general price index, expressed in base 100 for 2025, stood at 103.37 points.
When the next tranche is expected
In its latest forecasts, STATEC's central scenario puts annual inflation at 2.3% for 2026 and at 2.5% in both 2027 and 2028. On this basis, the next indexation tranche is expected in the second quarter of 2027, followed by another in the second quarter of 2028. STATEC is explicit that this calendar is sensitive to energy prices. In an alternative high scenario, where energy markets stay under pressure and annual inflation would reach 2.9% in 2027, both tranches would move forward by a quarter, to the first quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028. In an alternative low scenario, where energy prices ease faster, the second-quarter-2027 tranche stays in place but the following one would be pushed back to the third quarter of 2028. Across every scenario it modeled, STATEC expects at least one tranche to fall within the first half of 2027.
What a tranche means for your payslip
Each tranche applies the same 2.5% increase to every salary, wage and pension covered by the index, calculated on the gross amount already on the payslip. STATEC's note on the June 2026 adjustment is specific that the increase covered "salaries, traitements et pensions," meaning private-sector pay, public-sector compensation and pensions all moved together. For anyone comparing a job offer in Luxembourg, this matters: a quoted monthly salary is not fixed for the length of a contract. It is designed to move in step with the official index whenever STATEC confirms that the six-month average has crossed the published threshold, as it did at 1038.79 points in May 2026, and as it is now tracking toward the 1064.75-point mark that would trigger the next increase.
