What European Employers Ask Data Analyst Candidates to Know, by Country

Job ads for data analysts do not ask for the same skills everywhere in Europe. Looking at postings across 12 countries, some clear patterns and some local differences stand out.
SQL Is the Baseline Skill in Almost Every Market
SQL is the most requested skill in most of the countries in our data. It appears in 65% of Poland's 753 data analyst postings, the highest share among the countries covered. Sweden follows at 63% (out of 407 postings), and Luxembourg at 57% (out of 106 postings). Czechia lists SQL in 52% of 95 postings, Germany in 51% of 631, Portugal in 51% of 168, and Spain in 51% of 339. France asks for SQL in 50% of 579 postings and Belgium in 48% of 384. Ireland (42% of 148 postings) and the Netherlands (40% of 146 postings) show the lowest SQL shares in this group, though it still ranks among the top skills requested in both.
Python Comes Close Behind, and Leads in Some Countries
In a few markets, Python is mentioned more often than SQL. Germany lists Python in 56% of 631 postings, its most requested skill. Sweden mentions Python in 58% of 407 postings, Italy in 53% of 172, and Portugal in 52% of 168. Python also appears in 48% of Spain's 339 postings, 47% of the Netherlands' 146, 46% of Poland's 753, 43% of France's 579, 41% of Luxembourg's 106, and 36% of Ireland's 148.
Excel and Power BI Still Carry Weight in Belgium and the Netherlands
Not every market leans toward programming skills first. In Belgium, Power BI appears in 42% of 384 postings and Excel in 38%, both close behind SQL. The Netherlands lists Excel in 32% of its 146 postings and Power BI in 31%. Ireland mentions Excel in 37% of 148 postings, ahead of Python at 36%. Power BI also appears in 34% of Sweden's 407 postings and 34% of Czechia's 95, plus Tableau in 23% of Czechia's postings and 8% of Belgium's.
Machine Learning and Statistics Show Up Most in Italy and Ireland
Italy stands out for analytical and statistical skills: Statistics appears in 37% of its 172 postings and Machine Learning in 34%, both higher shares than most other countries in our data. Ireland lists Statistics in 25% of its 148 postings. Germany mentions Machine Learning in 24% of 631 postings, Spain in 22% of 339, and Sweden lists Statistics in 19% of its 407 postings.
Snowflake and dbt Appear Mainly in a Few Markets
A smaller set of tools shows up in specific countries rather than across the board. Snowflake is listed in 20% of Sweden's 407 postings and 13% of Czechia's 95, while dbt appears in 19% of Sweden's postings. Poland mentions Snowflake in 10% of its 753 postings.
Skill demand for data analysts clearly varies by country. Job seekers preparing applications may want to check which tools and skills appear most often in the market they are targeting before assuming the same requirements apply everywhere.
